Top Camel Safaris

Fancy a holiday on high? You'll see some amazing sights from the back of a camel, Debbie Nielson writes.
1 Jaisalmer
The desert surrounding Jaisalmer in the Indian State of Rajasthan is littered with interesting ruins and forts and the best way to see them is by camel train. Most safaris last three to four days and October to February is the besttime to go. Camel safaris usually cost from about 350 rupees ($14) a person with meals included. Contact the India Tourist Office on 02 9264 4855.
2 Pyramids of Giza
Experience these ancient wonders by dromedary for about $8 to $10. Their gorgeous eyes and long lashes are an irresistible lure in the midday sun. Contiki Tours has pyramid visits with optional camel rides (www.contiki.com), or try Crazy Camel Safaris, whose Bedouin guides offer the option of longer trips across the Sinai Peninsula. Visit www.crazycamel.de/.
3 Broome
The romance of a Cable Beach sunset is lost on these desert ships that can spoil a serene moment with a large, noisy, smelly ... well, you get the picture. But this hasn't dissuaded thousands of tourists from hopping aboard for the evening trek. The really adventurous can spend a few days exploring the region with Kimberley Camel Safaris. Visit www.bushwalks.com.
4 Sahara Desert
With crystal clear sky, a keffiyeh on your head to protect you from the sun and desert dunes shifting beneath the hooves of your transport, you'll feel like you've stepped out of a scene from Lawrence Of Arabia when you take to the Sahara on camel-back. Several operators run camel treks. Book when you get there or phone Morocco Made to Measure on 02 9380 7904.
5 Mongolia
A two-day camel trek makes up the second leg of an 18-day Mongolian tour and these bumpy beasts feel quite at home in the Gobi Desert. Overnight you'll get to sleep in a Mongolian ger (felt tent). Visit www.worldexpeditions.com.au or phone 02 9264 3366. For the ultimate directory on camel safaris here and overseas, visit www.austcamel.com.au.
